Dominic Murphy writer picture

I'm a writer, editor and campaigner, working across digital and print.​ I've been a journalist for the Observer and Guardian, and have more than 15 years' experience in the voluntary sector, telling stories about charities, the people they work with, and the impact they're having.

 

I'm passionate about helping charities grow their profile and impact through reaching the right audiences in the right way – while also providing excellent value for money.

 

I'm a strategic thinker and have held senior communications jobs at environmental and social justice charities, including Friends of the Earth and the anti-slavery charity Unseen, where I was Head of Communications. I have overseen website and brand overhauls, successfully revamped communications planning and have managed award-winning campaigns.  

 

But as well as the strategic stuff, I'm also used to rolling up my sleeves and getting stuck in. I'm at home with data and analytics, and used to turning what they tell me into communications with impact.  

 

And my journalist training means I'm used to the pressures of daily deadlines, to juggling competing priorities in a busy charity, and can work well with your team in a fast-moving environment. ​

 

I understand the pressures charities face in their communications and can help you with specific tasks such as writing and editing, as well as larger projects such as a communications strategy, your impact report and managing content for a website build.

 

Should the job require it, I bring in specialists such as graphic designers, web developers, user researchers and filmmakers. Check out some examples of my work.

I build great relationships with the individuals, teams and organisations I work with.

 

I'm keen to listen so as to better understand any problems you are trying to solve. After all, you'll know your charity and mission better than I do.

But I do understand the pressures of tight budgets in the voluntary sector, and have a track record of ensuring value for money and achieving genuine impact with limited resources.

Asking questions and delving into the data, I can support you to find strategic solutions, and then work with you to bring them to life. To do this I'll share tools and techniques with your teams – and training if needs be. 

 

Or I can be an extra pair of hands to fill any gaps in your communications and marketing – from writing and editing reports, to researching and creating powerful stories for your website;  from training workshops and press releases, to planning and messaging for a new campaign.
